Ler Tor Royal Project Development Center

History

Ler Tor Village located in remote mountainous area in Mae Teun Sub-district, Mae Ra-mard District, Tak Province was a poor opium poppy-growing village of Karen. There was also the encroachment of forestland for corn growing. In 2016, the Royal Project Foundation, therefore, started development activities in the area to dedicate the merit to His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej The Great. The development has followed the guidance of His Majesty King Rama IX to improve quality of life of the hill tribe people and to decrease opium poppy cultivation as well as to promote reforestation. With the area exploration and collaboration with other organizations, the projects were implemented gradually and finally the Ler Tor Royal Project Development Center was set up.

There are more than 6,856 Karen living in 6 villages and 25 communities.

Operation

At present, the Ler Tor Royal Development Center has set up field demonstration plots in order to find suitable crops for local climate and environment such as vegetables, fruits and coffee to generate the farmers’ sustainable income and improve their livelihood as well as to conserve soil and water. Furthermore, the center has supported natural resources and environment conservation, reforestation project called “Three Forests, Four Benefits”, soil improvement with compost producing and vetiver grass growing. With the collaboration among other Royal Project Development Centers as well as the participation of local communities and organizations, the communities are encouraged and strengthened self-sufficiency. The Royal Project Young Smart Farmer Project is also initiated to build new generation for future farmers.
