Nong Hoi Royal Project Development Center

History

In 1969, His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej The Great visited Nong Hoi Kao Village. At that time, the villagers earned their living by growing opium poppy and practicing shifting cultivation. Thus, His Majesty graciously initiated career development for the villagers. Then the Royal Forest Department with the collaboration of Hill Tribe Welfare and Development Center worked on the village development. However, the number of people migrating to the village and opium poppy growing areas were increasing. Nong Hoi Royal Project Development Center was established in 1984 after His Majesty the Late King paid another visit to the village with the aims to replace poppy cultivation with temperate crops and to improve quality of life quality of the locals to enhance self-sufficient communities as well as to restore and conserve the environment.

The village is located in steep mountainous area covering 11,883 rai or 4,694 acres.

Population

More than 3,762 Hmong, Lisu, Haw and lowland people live in 5 villages. 


Operation

Nowadays, Nong Hoi Royal Project Development Center has developed and passed on agricultural technologies to local farmers. Based on Food Safety Standards: Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) and organic system, the center has set up field demonstration plots of several crops including temperate crops for local farmers in 5 villages: Baan Nong Hoi Gao, Baan Nong Hoi Mai, Baan Mae Ki – Pang Hai, Baan Sam Lung and Baan Huay Wai to generate their sustainable income and good quality of life.

Furthermore, the center supports strengths-based individual and community engagement, reforestation project known as “Three Forests, Four Benefits”, soil and water conservation by vetiver grass growing, chemical use reduction campaign, and environmental contamination monitoring campaign. The center has become a learning center on highland agriculture for students, farmers and others interested people.


Main Products

Iceberg lettuce, Radicchio, cos, Chinese cabbage, kailaan, green oak leaf, red oak leaf, butter head lettuce, red coral lettuce, strawberry and grape.
