



History
In 1979, His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej The Great paid a visit to the hill tribes at Pang Ung Village and graciously gave recommendations on irrigation system and crop cultivation to replace opium poppy growing as well as permanent crop and infrastructure development. Subsequently, with the collaboration of Chiang Mai Agricultural Extension Office, Pang Ung Royal Project Development Center was established to promote temperate crop cultivation mainly fruits at the beginning. Later, field crop and vegetable promotion as well as natural resource conservation have been included. Other activities related to economy, society, and culture have also been supported by the center.

Operation
At present, Pang Ung Royal Project Development Center has set up field demonstration plots to promote local farmers to grow varieties of crops under Food Safety Standard like Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) in order to increase their income and improve their livelihood. The center also supports life quality development by promoting individual and community strengths. Natural resource and environmental conservation, reforestation project known as “Three Forests, Four Benefits”, vetiver grass growing to reduce soil erosion, chemical use reduction, and contamination monitoring are also supported with the participation of people. The center has become a highland agricultural learning center for students, farmers and others interested people.
