Thung Luang Royal Project Development Center

History

In 1979, with the Royal Grace of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulydej The Great, Thung Luang Royal Project Development Center started its work to solve the problem of a lack of basic infrastructure of the community as well as to promote temperate crop to replace opium poppy and shifting cultivation.

The area is plains between valleys covering 63,802 rai or 25,225 acres.

Population

More than 5,792 Karen and Hmong live in 9 villages and 6 communities. 


Operation

At present, Thung Luang Royal Project Development Center has supported the farmers to cultivate various kinds of crops suitable to local environment under soil and water conservation system. A numbers of field demonstration plots have been set up at the center in order to pass on appropriate agricultural technologies to the farmers and also to promote their production under Food Safety Standards such as Good Agricultural Practices (GAP), McDonald GAP and Organic Standard with the aims to generate their sustainable income and to improve their quality of life. Moreover, the supports are provided for community engagement in natural resource and environmental conservation, reforestation project called “Three Forests, Four Benefits”, vetiver grass growing to reduce soil erosion, individual and community strengths, Drug-Free Village Project, hygienic and environmental development and hill tribe handicraft preservation as well as Agricultural Cooperative and Saving Group establishment. The center has become a learning center on highland agriculture for students, farmers and other interested people.


Main Products

Iceberg Lettuce, cabbage, Chinese cabbage, baby carrot, cos, red oak leaf lettuce, green oak leaf lettuce, Chinese mustard, Japanese sweet potato, Japanese radish, garlic, avocado, cape goose berry, passion fruit, strawberry, conifer, chrysanthemum, coffee, and rice.
