Mae Hae Royal Project Development Center

History

In 1978, His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej The Great visited Baan Huay Kao Leep close to Bann Mae Hae, Sun Pa Tong District, Chiang Mai Province. His Majesty King Rama IX initiated to help improve quality of livelihood of people in Baan Mae Hae and villages nearby by introducing temperate crop cultivation to replace opium poppy and to stop shifting practice as well as supporting basic infrastructure development, self-sufficiency and environmental restoration and conservation.

The area is mountainous terrain with alternate plains and valleys covering 27,607 rai or 10,914 acres.

Population

There are 8 villages and 12 communities comprising of more than 6,089 Hill tribe, Karen, Hmong, Yunnan, and lowland people. 


Operation

Mae Hae Royal Project Development Center these days is providing development and supports for local farmers in growing vegetables under Food Safety Standards: Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) and McDonald G.A.P., as well as fruits and coffee in order to generate sustainable income and improve their livelihood. Furthermore, many varieties of activities related to community engagement in natural resource and environmental conservation, reforestation project called “Three Forests, Four Benefits”, soil erosion reduction by vetiver grass growing, life quality development, development of community and individual strengths, Drug-Free Village Project, community hygienic and environmental development, Agricultural Cooperative establishment and Saving Group activity have also been promoted and supported by the center. Today the center has become a learning center on highland agriculture for students, farmers and other interested people.

Main Products

Iceberg lettuce, cabbage, Chinese cabbage, beetroot, bunching onion, zucchini, parsley, Chinese mustard, cos, red oak leaf, green oak leaf, red leaf lettuce, persimmon, strawberry, Japanese plum, cape gooseberry, black seedless grapes, avocado, Asian pear (Yokoyama Wase), apricot, fig, and passion fruit.
